Two helicopters collided midair in New Jersey. One pilot died in the crash, while the other was seriously injured. The incident is being investigated by the FAA and NTSB.

In the town of Hammonton in New Jersey, two helicopters collided midair, resulting in one fatality and one serious injury. The incident occurred on Sunday at 11:25 a.m. local time, and numerous police, medical, and fire crews were dispatched to the scene.

The Helicopters Collided Midair

Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel stated that teams were quickly directed to the scene after the crash. Footage recorded by witnesses showed one of the helicopters rapidly spinning and crashing to the ground, while the second helicopter also lost control shortly afterward. Fire crews extinguished the burning helicopter in a short time.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that the crash occurred as a result of a midair collision between two helicopters, an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C. Only the pilots were on board each helicopter. One of the pilots died at the scene, while the other was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Eyewitnesses Described the Moments of Horror

Sal Silipino, the owner of a café near the crash site, said that the pilots were frequent customers and added:

“We were watching them take off as usual. Suddenly one of the helicopters began spiraling down, and shortly afterward the other one also lost control. I am still in shock.”

Another eyewitness, Dan Dameshek, stated that the helicopters spun out of control in the air. He said the first helicopter flipped and descended rapidly, and shortly afterward the second helicopter suffered the same fate.

The Crash Is Being Investigated by the FAA and NTSB

An investigation into the crash has been launched by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Former accident investigator Alan Diehl stated that most midair collisions occur because pilots are unable to see each other, adding, “It will be examined whether the ‘see and avoid’ rule was properly applied.”
